Case Study: Property Photography for Simply Thatch
Case Study
When a new client like Simply Thatch gets in touch, I know it’s not just about taking a few photos. It’s about understanding their craft, their business, and what makes them unique. For this project, the managing director, William McKie, wanted to commission a series of photographs for their new website, built by the fantastic team at Global Search Marketing. The goal was to build a comprehensive portfolio of images that would showcase their exceptional work on thatched properties across the country.
Simply Thatch isn’t just a thatching company; they are Master Thatchers. With over two decades of experience, they specialise in a range of traditional and contemporary thatching services, including straw and reed thatching, thatch maintenance, and historic building restoration. Their work requires immense skill, precision, and an eye for detail, which is exactly what I aimed to capture in every photograph.

The Creative Process: Capturing More Than Just a Roof
When I approached this project, my goal was to do more than simply document the finished roofs. I wanted to capture the essence of what Simply Thatch does: they create beautiful, timeless works of art that also serve a vital function. I spent time on location, considering the best angles, natural light, and weather conditions to bring out the texture and rich colour of the thatching materials, whether it was combed straw or water reed.
My background in property photography meant I knew how to frame each shot to make the buildings look their best. However, this was also a lesson in commercial photography; I had to capture the company’s brand values, quality, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for tradition, in every image. I paid close attention to details, from the intricate patterns to the meticulously neat lines, to ensure the photographs truly reflected the high standard of their work. The photographs needed to be visually stunning, but they also had to serve a commercial purpose: to give potential clients complete confidence in Simply Thatch’s abilities.
The Creative Process: Capturing More Than Just a Roof
The outcome was a powerful portfolio of images that truly elevated Simply Thatch’s online presence. William McKie was absolutely delighted with the results. As he put it, the images “truly transformed” their website, making it a much more powerful marketing tool. It’s a perfect example of how high-quality photography can be a crucial investment for any business, regardless of the industry.
This project was a fantastic collaboration, and I look forward to working with the Simply Thatch team again to continue building their portfolio. To see more of their amazing work and learn about their services, I highly recommend visiting their website at https://www.simplythatch.co.uk/.
